Primary Types of Kitchen Cabinets

Stock or Prefabricated Cabinets

Stock or prefabricated kitchen cabinets are “off-the-shelf” versions created by a manufacturer. These cabinets are available in limited design formations, but can be highly functional for the purpose and tend to offer the fastest installation. You can find prefabricated cabinets created from various materials, including wood, wood veneers, and even metals. While functional and cheap, at between $60 and $200 per linear foot, prefab or stock cabinets may only yield about 10 to 15 years of use.

Custom Cabinets

Custom cabinets are fully customized configurations to accommodate your preferences in design and layout. These cabinets involve working with a designer to pin down the details of the implements, such as the general layout, materials used, and finishes. Custom kitchen cabinets tend to come along with the highest kitchen cabinet installation cost, but the end result is most impressive. You can expect to pay roughly between $500 and $1,200 per linear foot for customized cabinetry. You get an individualized set of cabinets that are custom-designed to function within your space, as well as cabinets that could potentially last the lifetime of the home.

Kitchen Renovation, Los Angeles

Oasis Builders and Neev are hands down the absolute BEST! Having never done any construction or renovations of any kind, the whole process of renovating a new kitchen was so daunting to think about, but from the moment we first met Neev, we were put at ease and we knew he was the one! Neev was the first contractor we met with when shopping out contractors, but we did our due diligence to meet with at least 5 more. He set the bar so high on our first meeting that no one else even came close! He was so personable and super professional, understood our vision while also offering such great insight on the project as a whole. Every step of the way he was right there with us, incredibly patient and making sure everything was going to plan. His team is very hard working, always professional and always helpful and everything they did looked just spectacular in the end. Highly, highly recommended!!

Kitchen Renovation, Los Angeles

I hired Oasis Builders for my full kitchen renovation and I could not be more happy with the service Neev and his team provided. Home remodeling is always tough, you never know what to expect. But thanks to Neev, we got the job done and the results are SPECTACULAR! What sets Oasis Builders head and shoulders above the rest is the level of care, consideration and compassion. No matter what obstacle we faced, Neev was right there with a solution and how we could move the project forward.

/ Choosing Kitchen Cabinetry Upgrades Based On Your Budget

Refinish Existing Cabinetry

Cabinets with a good, sturdy structure and that are relatively free from surface flaws can be good for refinishing. Refinishing involves removing the old finish and applying a new to transform the appearance of the cabinetry. Homeowners tend to opt for kitchen cabinet refinishing if they have the smallest budget. The perks of refinishing are affordability, no removal of old cabinetry is required, and you get a new look. The downfalls of refinished kitchen cabinets is the process ca be time-consuming and messy, and you are stuck with the same cabinetry layout.

Reface Existing Cabinetry

Most cabinets can be refaced as long as their existing structure has good integrity. If you want to keep the original layout and countertops you have, resurfacing can be a good option. Kitchen cabinet resurfacing involves reinforcing the exterior of the cabinetry and then adding a decorative veneer to create a new look. The pros of refaced kitchen cabinets are that refacing can be less expensive and you get a new look. However, the downfall is refacing is not always an option, teh process can be time-consuming, and the finish may not last quite as long as just getting new cabinets.

New Prefabricated Cabinetry

Prefabricated cabinetry works out for those who want quick kitchen cabinets with a basic layout and are comfortable with limited design options. Prices can also be more affordable than custom designs. The obvious perk of prefabricated cabinetry include the fact that the cabinets are quick to get and easy to install. However, you may be faced with limited design options and layouts.

  • Easy to find at home improvement stores
  • Affordable
  • Quick to have installed

  • Limited design, kitchen cabinet materials, and size options
  • Not very durable
  • Hard to configure into some kitchen floor plans
Semi-Custom Cabinets

Semi-custom cabinets are prefabricated cabinetry pieces with detail options available. For example, you may only be able to choose from prefabricated layouts, but get to pick and choose what type of finish you want the cabinets to have. These cabinets can be functional, but they are also a bit more expensive than basic prefabricated cabinet designs. Typical prices run between $100 and $650 per foot. You may also find limited base material choices, just as it is with stock cabinets.

  • Quicker to get installed than custom cabinetry
  • Can offer several finish options
  • Often completed off-site fully before installation

  • May not offer the most durable finish options
  • Can be just as costly as custom cabinets with certain optional choices
  • May not always be as durable as custom cabinets
  • Limited layout options available
New Custom Cabinetry

Custom kitchen cabinets are obviously the most costly choice. However, these cabinets tend to work well for homeowners who want cabinets that are unique to their home. The process involves working with a designer or professional to create all aspects of the cabinetry and plan for the installation process. While these cabinets can be more costly, the end result tends to be the most impressive and durable.

  • Offers a unique end product fully customized to your needs
  • Durable designs can last the lifetime of the home
  • Can elevate the value of your home
  • Offers the most versatile listing of design, color, and kitchen cabinet material choices

  • Involves more time for design and installation
  • Higher price tag than prefabricated or stock designs
